The UK Government scraps the two-child limit on benefits

“This is a landmark moment for families. The UK Government’s bold decision to scrap the two-child limit marks a vital first step on a long but hopeful journey in tackling child poverty.

Today’s announcement will lift 450,000 children out of poverty by the end of this Parliament and make a huge difference to families who rely on baby banks.

Last year, baby banks supported 220,000 families and distributed more than three million essential items. Scrapping the two-child limit on benefits means fewer parents will have to choose between heating and food, and fewer children will go without the basics they need to thrive.

The ambition and commitment shown by this Government to drive down child poverty is commendable, we hope the next step will be going further by addressing the unique challenges of baby poverty in the child poverty strategy.”
